Formed in 1993 >>>, the band's original lineup includes singer David Gabbard, guitarist Tom Maxwell, bassist Bill Gaal and drummer Chris Houck. The group launches through an announcement published by Chris Houck in a local magazine called Rox Magazine in Baltimore. Tom Maxwell, who was living at this time in Baltimore, contacts Chris. Tom sends him an audio tape he was working on. Chris, who lived with Bill Gaal in Damascus, Maryland, receives the tape and is impressed. Together, they take songs from Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction>.

They record three tapes together. These demos include elements of grunge and hard rock, compared to the heavy metal sound for which the group will be known afterwards. Matt Holt will be part of Ingredient 17 (Matt and Tommy Sickles) who will record at Chris and Bill in Damascus. Tom Maxwell will listen to what Matt did with Ingredient 17, and want to replace Matt with Dave. The band then records their first self-titled album with ten songs.
