Masterplan was formed in 2002 after Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch were banned from the Helloween group. Their first EP, Enlighten Me , was released on November 18, 2002.

Their first album, Masterplan , was released in 2003. The band then consisted of Grapow and Kusch with Norwegian singer Jørn Lande. The keyboard parts of the album were mostly composed by Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch, and it's Janne "Warman" Wirman, the keyboardist of Children of Bodom, who takes care of recording keyboards on this album. However, he decides to continue with Children of Bodom although Grapow offers to stay in the group. It is Axel Mackenrott who replaces him during the tour that follows, then becomes a permanent member of the group. The lower parts of the album are played by Grapow and the band hires Jan-Sören Eckert (Iron Savior) to take the place of bassist. The group receives a European Border Breakers Award from the European Commission in 2004, for the success of their first album in Europe>.
